Oh, sweet Sullivan! This good boy’s first year of life may have been rough, but the future is bright. His new dad, Chris Hannah, explains that Sullivan was found on the street spinning in circles, confused and covered in bugs. A stranger saved him and kept him safe for a night before he was introduced to his new family by a rescue that thought he would be a perfect fit. Now, Sullivan has three deaf therapy dog siblings (@colethedeafdog) who have welcomed him into their pack. This beautiful pup’s life will not only have a purpose but will also be filled with fun! Chris took him to the pet store to get the good times started, where an abundance of treats, toys, and clothes awaited him. Never mind all the exciting dog smells! It must feel like winning the lottery for a blind and deaf rescue dog! When he left, he looked dapper in the new red coat he picked out himself, and of course, he also had a very own toy. He’s so precious!

How Do Deaf and Blind Dogs Navigate the World?
Deaf and blind dogs rely on their keen sense of smell to map out their surroundings, recognize familiar people and places, and avoid obstacles. According to Wag, one effective way to help blind and deaf dogs understand their environment at home is to use distinct scents in each room. Their sense of touch is also crucial as they use the sensitivity of their paws and whiskers to feel their way around. This enables them to detect changes in texture, air currents, and vibrations from the ground that reveal movement or the presence of others. These dogs also develop a strong spatial memory, learning the layout of their home or regular paths through consistent exploration. Although they may have a few challenges, overall, they are just like other dogs.
With his new family to support him, this good boy will do great things. Like his siblings, it won’t be long before he’s teaching humans how to see and hear with their hearts.
