Shut down the puppy-mill pipeline
Thousands of puppies from out-of-state puppy mills pour into Florida every year, then sit in pet store cages marketed as healthy dogs from responsible breeders.
But the reality of where these dogs come from is much different.
Records show that puppies sold in pet stores, including here in Manatee County, come from Midwestern dog brokers, middlemen who buy puppies in bulk from commercial breeders and then resell them to pet stores.
In the breeding facilities, dogs are kept in horrific conditions. Although most of us will never see the puppy mills, we all can see the puppy sitting in filth in a pet shop or may know someone facing heartbreak or financial hardship after buying a puppy that turned out to be sick.
It doesn’t need to be this way. Manatee County prohibited the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores in 2021, but last year new members of the County Commission voted to overturn the ordinance.
Now, in the face of ongoing complaints, the commissioners have agreed to start inspecting pet stores and breeders. It’s not enough. (“Manatee County approves new anti-animal cruelty measures on pet breeders and retail stores,” Oct. 23.)
We don’t need to import cruelty into Manatee County.
Our elected officials must do the right thing: Shut down the puppy-mill pipeline for good.

Vance suited to assume presidency
A letter Oct. 25 decried the possible election of former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance – and also the possibility of Vance later moving up to the presidency (“Consider threat if Vance takes over”).
First, Trump is not declining and barring the unforeseen will finish a term.
Just two months ago Trump entered a charity golf event 2-man best ball scramble with Bryson DeChambeau, one of the world’s best golfers. Both men hit and played the best ball to the hole.
On several holes, they actually used Trump’s shot as best ball. Amazing. No decline there.
Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, is the embodiment of the American Dream.
Born to humble circumstances, Vance joined the Marines after high school.
After the military he graduated summa cum laude from Ohio State University, before graduating from Yale Law School.
At age 40, Vance is a best-selling author, venture capitalist and many times multimillionaire, in addition to his election to the U.S. Senate in 2022.
He is a great family man and ideally suited to be president if the need arises.
It was a brilliant pick by Trump and, as we saw in the vice-presidential debate, Vance is far better than his Democratic counterpart, Gov. Tim Walz.
