4 Legitimate Ways Cats Are Good For Your Health

3 min read

They say that dogs are a man’s best friend — but what about their fluffier, more mysterious counterparts? As any cat owner knows, our feline pals aren’t always the aloof pets the internet might make them out to be (see: Grumpy Cat). In fact, there is plenty of scientific evidence that proves owning a cat can seriously boost both mental and physical health.

From reducing cortisol levels to lowering the risk of heart disease, here are just some of the ways cats can benefit your wellbeing – plus, simple things you can do to support their health in return, with Purina ONE®.

1. Lower stress levels

The stress hormone cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands in response to a perceived threat. Back when we were living in caves, this helped us to react to potentially deadly predators. Today, everyday stressors like the panic of a looming deadline or gridlock traffic during rush hour can trigger the same hormonal response.

Long-term exposure to cortisol can lead to a ton of negative health implications – from sleep issues to digestive problems – and that’s where our furry friends step in. Research shows that as little as 10 minutes of hands-on interaction with a cat can have a ‘significant impact’ in reducing cortisol.

    2. Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease

Spikes in cortisol can also contribute to an increase in cardiovascular issues – like heart attacks, heart failure and strokes – which makes stress-relieving time spent with your pet all the more important. Research carried out over a 13-year period at the University of Pennsylvania found participants that had owned cats in the past were less likely to suffer from a deadly heart attack than those who had never owned one. Similarly, a 2009 study showed that cat ownership led to a lower risk of cardiovascular-related death, and a 2008 study by the University of Minnesota’s Stroke Institute concluded that cat owners had a 30% lower risk of heart attack. Hard to argue with stats like that.

      3. Boosted gym recovery

Well, potentially. Studies show that vibrational frequencies between 25-100Hz can have therapeutic benefits – 25-50Hz aids bone growth and around 50Hz can aid muscle recovery after intensive training. With cats purring at around 25-150Hz, there may be some merit to the idea that the sound and vibrations can provide these healing benefits. Add ‘petting your cat’ to your gym routine and see how you get on.

      4. Improved mental health

A 2019 study by Cats Protection reported that a whopping 93.7% of cat owners said their pet has helped their mental health. That’s no surprise, when we consider the chemical effect that spending time with a cat has on the body. Firstly, there’s the release of oxytocin, otherwise known as the ‘cuddle chemical’, which boosts cat owners’ overall wellbeing while reducing feelings of loneliness – an issue that is particularly endemic among men. Cats also trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin, which are key hormones associated with regulating mood.
