Believe it or not, puppies aren’t the only dogs experiencing those iconic “firsts.” As sad as it is, there are plenty of full-grown dogs out there who haven’t truly lived, and their life really starts upon rescue.
This was true for one sweet Pit Bull, at least. On Thursday, February 20th, she got to experience pet store fish for the first time, and it went exactly as well as expected. Honestly, she might need a fish of her own soon:
I’m so glad that Katie Levans and her boyfriend were able to rescue Raisin. She seems exactly like the type of dog who needs to be out and about, making friends with fish and living it up!
Raisin was rescued in the Los Angeles area when she was just a puppy. She was found left in a parking lot, and one of her eyes was unsalvageable, so she’s living life with just one eye. Even so, she’s remained in good spirits: she adores her mama, her dad, and her 16-year old “trash cat” bestie, who was born shortly after Katie took in a pregnant street cat.

Now, Raisin has done a lot of things in her life since moving into her forever home, including lots of “outside” things. She loves walks in the warm LA sun and trips to Starbucks for pup cups, but she had never seen the fish at Petco. She’s lucky her dad remedied that situation and picked her up to see them: I don’t think she could live without it! My dog has an appointment at Petco today… you will absolutely catch me trying this.
Fish Are Intriguing For Dogs
I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t like sitting in front of a fish tank. They’re just so calming; that’s why they’re so prevalent in doctors’ offices and even in vet clinics. Raisin certainly seems to enjoy them!
Fish are often vibrant; dogs can see certain shades of blue and yellow, so those colors might be particularly enticing to them. Additionally, fish move fast, which will definitely help to catch your dog’s eye. They don’t understand what they are or why they’re in such a hurry, so they love to stare at them to try and figure it out.
Having a fish tank in your home can be a nice source of entertainment for your pup during those “lulls” throughout the day, especially if it’s a big tank with lots of plants swaying as well as fish swimming. If you want to safely have a fish tank for your dog, you should:
-
Keep the lid on at all times (this is honestly just a good practice in general).
-
Keep it on a high surface that they can’t reach.
-
Hide the cords for the lights/filters/heaters in a place your dog can’t access.
Don’t worry, though: if you’re not ready to commit to a fish tank (they’re a surprising amount of work!), there are dozens of livestreams or long-form videos on Youtube that’ll have that same effect. Or, you could pull a Raisin and take a trip to Petco to show them what they’re missing!
