Dog Breed Information And Everything To Know

The Dobermann is a popular German dog breed known worldwide for their finely-tuned senses and alert nature.

“Dobermanns are very adaptable, even-tempered and calm, and can fit in well with family life. They love nothing more than being part of everything going on around them,” Axel Lagercrantz, CEO at Pets4Homes, tells Country Living.

“The reason they’re often characterised as watch-dogs is because they don’t need to be taught how to protect, it’s just a natural trait deeply embedded in their psyche. They’re not known to be ‘barkers’ but when strangers are about they’ll let you know.”

Is a Dobermann a good pet for families?

“The Dobermann’s temperament generally makes them a good choice for families providing they’re well trained and well handled,” Axel tells us.

“Without the right guidance, a Dobermann can come wilful and unmanageable. But if they are well-trained and socialised from a young age, which is vital, they can become a valued family member and get very attached to older children in a household.”

Dobermanns are also instinctively protective of the children they grow up with. “They will feel the need to guard them, although I wouldn’t advise families with babies or very young children to get one.”

Are Dobermanns good for first-time owners?

Dobermanns require strong training and handling, so they are probably not the best dog for a first-time owner.

“This is because their training and handling requires someone with a strong knowledge of the breeds and prior experience with dogs,” adds Axel.

“They are renowned for being very loyal to their families however, the downside to their devotion is that they hate it when they are left alone. They’re definitely better suited to households where one person stays at home when everyone else is out so that they never spend too much time on their own.”

How much exercise does a Dobermann need?

“They are also just as happy living in a town as they are in a country, but make sure to give them the right amount of exercise – up to two hours a day.”

This should include activities such as walks, jogging, running in a securely fenced area, or engaging in interactive play sessions.

6 interesting facts about Dobermanns

1. “Dobermanns owe their origin to Herr Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a German tax collector who created the breed in the 1800s. As well as being a tax collector he was a night watchman and wanted to develop a dog that was courageous, bold, and intelligent to work alongside him, one that needed a ‘good nose and a strong mouth’,” says Axel.

2. Dobermanns were very useful during World War Two. Around 75% of dogs used during combat were Dobermann Pinschers.

3. “The first Dobermanns to be recorded in German stud books as being foundation dogs were called Bosco and Caesi, having been whelped in 1893 and 1894 — this makes Dobermanns a relatively new breed” adds Axel.

4. They have a great sense of humour and they thrive on playing games.

5. Dobermanns are considered very smart dogs.

6. They make excellent service dogs.
